Tankerness House Garden is planted with herbaceous borders surrounding a large lawn area situated within a larger 18th century walled garden. Which protectets it from the Orkney elements, there is also a variety of other plants/trees/shrubs the garden has some rockeries with one large main Rockery made from odd bits of Red Sandstone - the same red sandstone as St.Magnus Cathedral across the road. Then at the bottom of the garden is a strange tower shaped building with a conical roof, known as the Groatie Hoose.The head gardener who is usually about is always willing to share knowledge about the shrub/plant/tree.Tankerness House Gardens are Kirkwall's public gardens now looked after by a local charity Orkney Blide Trust at no cost to the public.The gardens are accessed either through the Orkney Museum or directly from Tankerness Lane - roadway between the bank and Museum.
